Nara Park deer奈良公園の鹿
About 8 min on foot, east
Nearly 1,500 wild deer (1,465 in the 2025 count), protected as a natural monument.
Feed them only shika senbei, hand it over quickly, and show open palms when you run out. Deer can butt and bite.
Kōfuku-ji興福寺
About 5 min east
A great temple beside the park.
National Treasure Hall 9:00–17:00, ¥900 cash. The five-storey pagoda is under wraps for restoration.
Tōdai-ji東大寺
About 20 min on foot
One of the world’s largest bronze Buddhas, in a vast wooden hall.
7:30–17:30 Apr–Oct, 8:00–17:00 Nov–Mar; ¥800.
Kasuga Taisha春日大社
About 25 min on foot
A vermilion shrine known for its hanging lanterns.
Grounds 6:30–17:30 (Nov–Feb 7:00–17:00). Inner sanctuary 9:00–16:00, ¥700.
Naramachiならまち
About 15 min on foot, south
Old merchant lanes of wooden townhouses, now cafés and shops.
Free to stroll. The Kōshi-no-Ie townhouse is free, 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays.
Isuien Garden依水園
About 15 min on foot
Two linked gardens that borrow the hills and Tōdai-ji’s gate.
9:30–16:30; ¥1,200. Closed Tuesdays and for garden work in late September.
