Yanaka Cemetery谷中霊園

A Meiji-era cemetery of about 10 hectares with a cherry-lined central path, the site of the old Tennoji pagoda, and the graves of many well-known artists and writers.

There is no parking, so come by train; the official page has an English map PDF.

Tennoji Temple天王寺（谷中七福神 毘沙門天）

A Tendai temple said to date from the late Kamakura period; its Bishamonten is one of the Yanaka Seven Lucky Gods, and the site of the old five-story pagoda is nearby in Yanaka Cemetery.

The temple sits in a corner of Yanaka Cemetery, so the two are easy to combine in one walk.

A staircase down to Yanaka Ginza, named by public vote for the sunsets visible from it.

Come around sunset, then walk down the stairs into Yanaka Ginza.

Kannonji Temple観音寺

JR Nippori Station (no exit named) · about 6 min walk

A Shingon temple at its present site since 1680; its late-Edo earthen wall, a nationally registered cultural property, is one of Yanaka's symbols.

The 37.6 m wall runs along the south side of the grounds, and the temple has a memorial tower for the 47 Ako samurai.

A compact shopping street about 170 meters long with roughly 60 small independent shops, from food and drink to clothing and ceramics.

Opening hours and holidays differ by shop, so check each shop directly; there is no parking on the street.

Nippori Saito-yu日暮里 斉藤湯

JR Nippori Station (no exit named) · about 3 min walk

A renovated neighborhood sento (reopened in 2015) with a high-concentration carbonated bath, a silky microbubble bath and an outdoor rock bath, all in soft water.

Soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided, and towels can be rented (¥40, bath towel ¥60), so you can go empty-handed.
